DareToCareFood offer some of the best quality yellowfin tuna from the Maldives, where tuna fishery is considered to be the most sustainable of its kind in the world. For us it is essential to support sustainable fishery and therefore it is a deliberate choice to deal with fish caught with consideration for a healthy aquaculture.
By solely offering tuna, caught in the Maldives, DareToCareFood take a stand that supports a more sustainable seafood industry. Since 2015 Maldivian fisherman have been working hard to reduce their amount of yellowfin tuna catches by using a handline, pole and line method, which ensures that “maximum sustainable yields are maintained with zero bycatch”, the Maldives Seafood Processors and Exporters Association (MSPEA) has noted.[1] Additionally, the Maldives tuna fishery supports the livelihoods of over 30 percent of the nation’s population.

How does pole and line tuna fishing work?
This fishing method, where fifteen fishermen stand shoulder to shoulder on a fishing boat, each holding a long pole, strung with a line and lure, makes sure that the tuna and other large pelagic species are caught one fish at the time. The Marine Steward Council (MSC), an international non-profit organization that promotes solutions to eradicate overfishing and runs the only internationally recognised eco-certification for sustainability in wild-fishing, has certified the pole and line-fisheries because of the low level of catches and bycatches, which help fish populations to remain healthy.
The method’s more selective approach to fishing also ensures that other animals, such as sharks, turtles, whales and dolphins are more rarely caught and killed.[1] In this way, the Maldives is a pioneer within the field of sustainable fishery by using fishing methods the wider industry could learn a lot from.
